The Duodopa Medication

The Duodopa medication is a gel formulation of the standard Parkinson’s medication of Levodopa and Carbidopa.

The Gel medication is manufactured by AbbVie Inc., an American pharmaceutical company.

It is formulated in the same ratio of Levodopa to Carbidopa as in the standard oral medication of Madopar (mainly EU, GB and Australia) or Sinemet and Kinson (USA).  The ratio is 4 mL of Levodopa to 1 mL of Carbidopa.

A Madopar 125 or a Sinemet 125 is 100 mg of Levodopa and 25 mg of Benserazide (Madopar) or Carbidopa (Sinemet).

Each cassette of Duodopa Gel contains 100 mL of Gel and each 1 mL of gel contains 20 mg of Levodopa and 5 mg of Carbidopa Monohydrate.

So each cassette contains 2000 mg of Levodopa.  The mathematics here are - 100 mL of Gel multiplied by 20 mg of Levodopa per mL of Gel to give 2000 mg of Levodopa in a full cassette (100 x 20 = 2000).

Or the same amount of Levodopa as in 20 tablets or capsules of Madopar, Simemet or Kinson 125.

The Duodopa is a “Cold Chain” medication and has to be stored between 2 Deg C and 8 Deg C.  It has a very short shelf life of 15 weeks and that means it really can’t be stockpiled at home – unlike tablets or capsules.
